Joann Fabric, a favorite among crafters and DIY enthusiasts, is closing stores across the United States, including 24 in New York and two on Long Island, as part of a broader downsizing effort amid bankruptcy proceedings.
The company has struggled financially since going public in 2021. It was delisted from the Nasdaq stock exchange last year.
Why Joann Fabric Is Closing Stores
The Ohio-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January — for the second time in less than a year.
Joann announced today that it will be closing 500 out of its remaining 800 stores as part of the latest scaling down effort, attributing the decision to declining sales.
Joann’s closures reflect the challenges facing brick-and-mortar retailers. Just last month, Macy’s announced that it would be closing locations across the country, including three in Long Island.

The closures affect stores across the state, including two on Long Island. Most of the closures, however, are New York’s upstate and western regions.
The Long Island locations closing are in Westbury in Nassau County and West Babylon in Suffolk County. The Joann store in Bohemia will remain open.
