It’s the end of an era for Jericho-based 1-800-Flowers.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: FLWS). The embattled Long Island floral and gifting giant has announced that its longtime leader and founder, Jim McCann, is stepping down as chief executive officer — for the second time.
McCann, who founded 1-800-Flowers in 1976, will remain with the company as executive chairman.
His successor, Adolfo Villagomez, takes over as CEO on May 12, 2025. It’s the first time someone outside the McCann family has held the role.
A Leadership Change Amid Financial Turmoil
The leadership shakeup comes at a turbulent time.
On Friday, the company’s stock plummeted by over 16% after releasing its third-quarter 2025 earnings report. The company missed analyst estimates, posting a net loss of $178.2 million for the quarter, with revenue dropping 12.6% year-over-year to $331.5 million.
The numbers underscore the challenges the company has faced trying to recover from the pandemic, adjust to shifting consumer spending habits, and self-inflicted technological wounds.
Villagomez Digital Experience Will Be Key
Villagomez brings an impressive background, having most recently served as CEO of Progress Residential, the largest private operator of single-family rentals across more than 40 U.S. markets. Before that, he was president of Home Depot’s online businesses, where he led digital sales exceeding $20 billion in 2021. Villagomez also spent time as a partner at McKinsey & Company.
His experience and leading Home Depot’s digital transformation will be key for 1-800-Flowers.
“I am incredibly honored to lead 1-800-Flowers.com as we enter a transformational new era,” Villagomez said. “With its unique legacy and unrivaled assets, we have the privilege to be part of the most important moments in our consumer’s lives. I cannot wait to hit the ground running.”
While McCann’s departure signals the close of a foundational chapter, Villagomez’s appointment marks the start of a fresh effort to transform and revitalize one of Long Island’s most iconic brands.
