It may have been snubbed for a Tony nomination, but Othello — starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal — remains Broadway’s most in-demand ticket.
With two Hollywood heavyweights sharing the stage, this production has become the hottest show in town, playing to sold-out audiences at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
But timing is running out to catch Washington and Gyllenhaal on stage together, as Othello is in its final full month on Broadway.
Why Othello Is the Must-See of the Season
For Washington, a two-time Academy Award winner and Tony Award recipient, Othello marks his returns to Broadway for the first time since The Iceman Cometh in 2018.
Gyllenhaal, an Oscar and Tony nominee, joins him as Iago — setting up one of the most anticipated onstage duels in years.
Directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon, this Othello delivers a thrilling, modern take on Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy of jealousy, power, and betrayal.
Leon puts it simply: “I want to take the Shakespearean out of Shakespeare. I’m making a Shakespeare for everybody.”
Known for his ability to bring clarity and emotional punch to classic works, Leon adds, “I want to welcome a younger generation to my production and promise them that it’ll be so clear.”
Prepare for a knockout night of theater as Washington’s Othello and Gyllenhaal’s Iago clash in Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy about love, jealousy, and betrayal. As Leon puts it, “It’s universal themes — how important it is to love, how fragile love is, how poisonous jealousy is.”
Where, When, and How to Get There
Othello is running at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre (243 West 47th Street, New York, NY) through June 8, 2025.
