Veteran sports broadcaster Dave Sims is the new play-by-play broadcaster for the New York Yankees on WFAN. He replaces the legendary John Sterling, who retired mid-season last year and returned at the end of the for the Yankees’ playoff run. Sims will be paired with another trailblazer in sports media, Suzyn Waldman.
The 71-year-old Sims was the television play-by-play man for the Seattle Mariners from 2007 to the end of the 2024 season. He brings a booming voice and a rich sports broadcasting career.
Sims is Familiar to New Yorkers
With Sims, the Yankees bring another big name to fill Sterlings’ shoes. Sims is a legend in his own right with a career that spans five decades and includes live play-by-play announcing for college basketball, college football, the NBA, the NFL, and Major League Baseball.
He’s no stranger to New York. Early in his career, Sims was a sportswriter for the Daily News. From 1986 to 1993, he was a radio host for the New York Knicks. And in the 1990s, he was a weekend sports anchor on Channel 2 (WCBS-TV).
This is actually Sims’ second stint with WFAN. From 1989 to 1993, he was the co-host of the midday show with Ed Coleman.
In a statement published by WFAN, Sims said, “It’s great to be home. What an honor to be part of the iconic Yankees franchise. New York is where it all started for me, and I can’t wait for Opening Day and to work with my good friend Suzyn!”
