It’s lights out for Candelita in Flushing, but the New York Mets may have another song to take them into a new season with even bigger expectations after the acquisition of Juan Soto.
Infielder and Latin pop star José “Candelita” Iglesias is heading west, signing a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres this week. He takes his contact hitting — and his hit song OMG — with him to the West Coast.
But the Mets may already have a new soundtrack for 2025, and it comes from across the ocean.
Introducing Ghost Fork
Japanese singer Yusuke Kamiji recently released Ghost Fork, a song honoring Mets starter and Japan native Kodai Senga and his devastating forkball — famously dubbed the “Ghost Fork.”
Kamiji also has a surprising connection to the Amazins. He played high school baseball with Daisuke Matsuzaka, who wrapped up his MLB career with the Mets.
The English-Japanese track features the lyrics:
🎶 Ghost foooooork
High and low it’s like your own short movie
Ready, ready, ready, action! 🎶
Given it a listen:
Can Ghost Fork Replace OMG?
Ghost Fork offers a different vibe from Iglesias’s OMG. It remains to be seen whether it can replace it as the Mets’ anthem. The same can be said for Candelita’s bat. He led the Mets in hitting last year with a .337 batting average in 270 at-bats.
Iglesias also leaves a hole at second base. Veteran Jeff McNeil looks to return to the position, but could share time with Brett Baty and even prospect Luisangel Acuña.
